Sony's invite for its IFA event on September 1 teases many new devices

Sony has first revealed the date of its IFA press conference last month, and today it's finally started sending out invites for the September 1 event. They look exactly like the one pictured below, and reveal that Sony is pretty ambitious about this whole thing, possibly launching many different product types on that occasion.

There's a phone in the image, which means we might have to expect a new Xperia device. The one depicted here looks nothing like the oft-leaked Xperia XR, though. Then again, it wouldn't make sense for Sony to show us the new handset's back in the invite, basically spoiling its own reveal. And since there haven't recently been many rumors about another new Sony phone except the XR, we assume it's the one becoming official on September 1.
Alongside it Sony looks set to showcase the PlayStation VR once more, a pair of headphones, a Bluetooth headset, a camera of some sort, a new TV, and some other things too - even if we can't necessarily identify them all by this picture alone.

Samsung launches a bunch of new accessories along with the Note7

The Galaxy Note7 isn’t only thing Samsung launched in the US yesterday. The company announced that it is releasing several new accessories which help to make up its new lineup of “collections” which promote different lifestyles as part of Samsung’s latest marketing campaign.
Move, Explore, Create, and Go with Galaxy - These collections focus on fitness, learning and experiencing VR, creating new content, and using products for a mobile lifestyle, respectively.
Samsung is launching a new updated Gear VR (hands-on here) which will work with Smartphones all the way back to the S6, the Gear 360 camera which is used to create 360 photos and videos viewable on Gear VR (hands-on here), Gear Icon X totally wireless earbuds, and Level Active headphones which are much like the PowerBeats2 wireless headphones.

Also not previously mentioned by Samsung, AT&T will be selling the “Samsung Connect auto”. It’s a device that you plug into your car’s ODBII interface port (which is used for programming and reading a vehicle’s diagnostics).
This device can provide your passengers with a Wi-Fi hotspot using AT&T’s LTE, and “send real-time alerts to the driver, improving efficiency and safety on the road”. You’ll also be able to track your car via GPS, and be alerted if your car’s location changes.
The 'Samsung Connect auto' works with its own app which can be installed on either Android or iOS.

Nokia's OZO VR camera gets a $15,000 price cut

What's the biggest price drop you've ever seen? Not percentage-wise, mind you, but in actual currency terms. How about $15,000? That's exactly how much Nokia has dropped the price for its OZO VR camera by. In case you're not familiar with one of the Finnish company's less well known enterprises, then you're probably assuming the OZO wasn't very cheap to begin with. And you'd be right.
It launched in March priced at $60,000. From this point on you can buy one for 'just' $45,000. Progress? Sure. Speaking of that, so far it's been up for grabs in the US and Europe, but starting next month Nokia will also be selling it in China.

As its price implies, this is made for professionals, coming with a total of eight lenses, each sitting in front of a 2K x 2K sensor. They cover a 360-degree-by-180-degree viewing angle and produce 3D video at 30fps with a base sensitivity of ISO 400. Oh, and there are eight built-in microphones too, which capture multi-directional sound.

Huawei G9 Plus unveiled with SD625 SoC, 16MP camera

Huawei has unveiled a new smartphone, dubbed Huawei G9 Plus. The device is powered by Snapdragon 625 chipset and sports a 5.5-inch full HD display. It comes in 3GB/32GB and 4GB/64GB memory configurations, and packs in a 3,340mAh battery.
In terms of camera, the handset features a 16MP rear unit with support for 4K video recording, and an 8MP front shooter. Weighing in at 160g and having a thickness of 7.3mm, it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with EMUI version 4.1 on top. There's also a fingerprint sensor on the back.
If you compare, the Huawei G9 Plus looks strikingly similar to the Huawei Maimang 5 that was made official by the Chinese company last month.
The phone was made official in China. As for price, the 3GB RAM variant carries a tag of RMB 2,399 (around $360). The cost of 4GB RAM model isn't currently known. Registrations for the device have already started, with sales beginning August 25.

Another set of Meizu Pro 7 images leak

Just a day after renders alleged to be of the Meizu Pro 7 leaked online, the device has again leaked, this time in live images.
The new leak, which shows off the handset's front as well as side, reconfirms double curved screen.
In case you missed, rumors that the Pro 7 will feature a curved display first started making rounds back in May this year, when a leaked image of the device surfaced online. The Chinese company is holding an event on September 3, and we expect to see the device being made official on that date.

Nikon announces entry-level D3400 with Bluetooth file transfer

Nikon has launched the successor to the entry-level D3300 in the form of the new D3400. The newer model maintains most of the specifications of the older model with a few additions and subtractions here and there in a lighter and more compact monocoque body.

One of the additions is SnapBridge, which uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mode to stay paired with a smartphone or tablet and transfer images automatically when you take them. The pairing process is simpler and easier than using Wi-Fi but the speeds will obviously be lower.
Nikon also claims a major boost in battery life, with the D3400 now being able to capture 1200 images on a full charge compared to 700 on the D3300.
Other than that the D3400 is mostly identical to the D3300, featuring the same 24 megapixel Nikon DX format CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 100 - 25600, 1080p60 video recording and 5 fps burst model for up to 16 RAW images. The D3400 lacks the ultrasonic sensor cleaning and external audio input of the D3300, however.

Nikon also announced four new lenses, the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lightweight zoom, and the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED and AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR telephoto zoom, with the VR versions featuring Nikon's Vibration Reduction feature.
The Nikon D3400 with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR will be available in September for $649.95, and with the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED for $999.95.
The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR are priced at $199.95 and $249.95, respectively, and the F-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED and AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR are priced at $349.95 and $399.95, respectively.

Three iPad models rumored for next year, AMOLED screens coming in 2018

Apple is prepping three new iPad models for next year, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, the world's foremost speculator on all things Apple-related (and an analyst by day). These will all come with similar designs to what we have today in Apple's tablet range, with more drastic redesigns being pushed to 2018.
In 2017, we are apparently going to see a 12.9" iPad Pro 2, but also a 10.5-inch iPad Pro - a first for Apple in that size. These two will allegedly be complemented in the company's portfolio by a lower-cost 9.7-inch tablet. The 12.9" and 10.5" iPads will both be powered by the upcoming Apple A10X chipset, built on TSMC's 10nm process. The new 9.7-inch model will feature the A9X, which is the same SoC found inside the currently selling iPad Pro 9.7.
In 2018, on the other hand, Apple will redesign its iPads, and Kuo expects the company to use flexible AMOLED displays for its flagships. Previously, the same analyst has predicted the same thing happening to iPhones in 2017. But while we wait for this dramatic revamp of Apple's slates in two years, iPad sales will keep dropping.

Galaxy Note7 release gets delayed in Russia and Ukraine because of how successful it is elsewhere

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 seems to have become a victim of its own success, in some places at least. Thus, delays are to be expected, in at least a couple of markets.
The Note7 was supposed to go on pre-order in Ukraine on August 16, with the release planned for September 2, just like everywhere else in Europe. That timeline has been changed, however. The new information is that pre-orders will start on September 7, with the device becoming available on September 30. That's quite the delay, almost one full month.

It apparently has to do with the "unprecedented demand for the smartphone in the world", so Samsung is postponing its launch in some countries in order to make sure that it will have enough initial stock in others.
The situation is similar in Russia, where the Note7 was also supposed to launch on September 2. Here though the delay isn't as bad, with the new release date being September 16 (so only two weeks later than it should have been).
In Ukraine, the phone will cost UAH 25,000 (about $1,003 or €900) and those who pre-order will receive a free new Gear VR.

Samsung Gear VR (2016) is now available to pre-order

The Samsung Gear VR (2016), which was unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note7 earlier this month, is now available to pre-order. Amazon is currently accepting pre-orders for the device, which sets you back $100 and starts shipping August 19.
To refresh, the new version of the Samsung Gear VR features various improvements over the original model, including a new deep ink blue color, a bump in total field of view to 101 degrees, extended device compatibility, as well as support for both micro USB and USB Type-C.
You can check out our detailed Gear VR (2016) hands-on here.

iPhone 7 Plus poses for the camera in black

iPhone 7 Plus poses for the camera in blackAnother day, another iPhone 7 rumor and also another twist to the never-ending mystery that is Apple's upcoming smartphone lineup. It seems like the closer we get to September and thealleged September 7 release date, the further we end up digging ourselves in an overwhelming mess of rumors.
Alleged iPhone 7 Plus Alleged iPhone 7 Plus
Alleged iPhone 7 Plus
Today brings yet another confusing piece of the puzzle - a few shots of what appears to be a 5.5-inch iPhone 7 with a dual-camera setup, POGO pins on the back an to add a finishing touch to the mix - colored in black. Naturally, this leaves us a little perplexed. If we stick to the original theory of three iPhone 7 models - the alleged "Plus" and "Pro" being of the 5.5-inch variety, then this would definitely be the highest tier device in the mix.
So far so good, it all works out, right? However, last we heard and saw yesterday, there appeared to be only two versions of the handset, the bigger one equipped with the dual-camera, but no the POGO pins. And if quantity is anything to go by, the day before that we got pretty much the same information form yet another source.
Alleged iPhone 7 Plus Alleged iPhone 7 Plus
Alleged iPhone 7 Plus
In light of this, we thought it better to concentrate on the photos themselves and what they do appear to showcase with confidence, whether legitimate or not. This is not the first time we are hearing about the possibility of a black color option, as well as other new finishes, likeDeep Blue for that matter. So the sight of a dark iPhone isn't exactly shocking. However, we must say it looks incredibly stylish, complete with little details like the shade of the antenna bands and we really hope this rumor turns out to be true.
Another thing we can clearly see is the absence of a 3.5mm jack on the bottom of the unit and a total of two grills. Given the current situation and influx of leaks, we are far from the idea that this could definitively settle the arguments over the audio jack or the stereo speaks, but it is yet another small grain of proof for one of the scenarios, if anyone is still keeping track.

Slide shows iPhone 7 will have wireless charging and waterproofing

Rumors about the iPhone are like fishermen's stories - they grow bolder and grander as time goes on. A photo of a presentation slide lists the highlights of the upcoming phone.
The slide shows an iPhone 7 Pro (dual cameras) but is labeled iPhone 7 Plus. That aside, the phone will run iOS 10 (obviously) and will lack a headphone jack ( a rumor that has been confirmed and denied several times by unofficial sources).
It will allegedly have wireless charging and will be water resistant. Those are two things that Apple hasn't touched, while they are becoming more and more common on Android phones.

This isn't the first time we've heard of a waterproof iPhone 7 with wireless charging, but we're still not ready to believe it. Next thing you know, people will start talking about a microSD slot.

iPhone 7 and 7 Pro photographed with camera humps

Apple has gone camel on its iPhones - the cameras have humps! The iPhone 7 camera protrudes from the back as does the dual camera on the iPhone 7 Pro.

It's difficult to judge just how thick the hump is from a photo, but one thing is for sure - it's a lot bigger than current iPhones have. it seems to line up with a protective case, so we're maybe looking at a millimeter.
Another iPhone 7 shell was shot from a different angle - the bottom - and there are no less than three interesting things to note.
First off, the 3.5mm headphone plug is gone. Maybe it moved to the top (there's no photo of that), maybe the Lightning port is the new destination for wired headphones. The other photo of iPhone 7's camera hump came with assurance that the 3.5mm jack is still on board (but there was no photo evidence to back that up).
The underside of the iPhone 7 shows no 3.5mm jack, a second speaker instead

Also, there are two speaker grills. Maybe one of them is decorative, but maybe, just maybe, Apple finally decided to make the jump to stereo speakers (even if they are down-firing).
And then there are the antenna lines, a thick plastic line that (used to) pass through the top and the bottom. Apple clearly went through several iterations of the iPhone 7 and there's no way to know for certain if this is what it settled on.
